A riot is one of the clearest examples of societal breakdown. While a runner-up to warfare in that regard, big enough riots can leave whole cities looking as if they have just been through an actual war, and can leave scores of people injured or dead. Riots tend to be set off by specific events, but represent the bubbling over of years of simmering tensions.
